- We have had a suspected case of parvovirus at the surgery. This disease affects only dogs and causes a severe diarrhoea with large amounts of blood passed with the diarrhoea. Untreated parvovirus is usually fatal and even with prompt treatment, upto 25% of dogs will die. Fortunately, parvovirus is easy to prevent through vaccination and we would urge all owners with unvaccinated dogs to get them protected as soon as possible to prevent a major outbreak. Ask us at the surgery for more information.

- Diarrhoea seems to have taken over Tottington and we have had four or five times as many cases this week than we would normally expect to see. There seems to be a highly contagious infection in the village which is affecting cats & dogs. We would urge everyone to be especially careful with hygiene, cleaning up after their dog and making sure that dogs that normally scavenge are stopped from doing that at the moment. This diarrhoea (and mild vomiting) is best treated early before your cat or dog becomes too ill.
- March 26th 2005
- We have been busy repainting the surgery over the weekend to keep the decoration to the highest standards. All the doors and woodwork have been repainted and now look much better. The appearance of the surgery is very important to us but this also helps with hygiene.

- Our new website attackoftheworms.penninevets.co.uk has been launched, highlighting the change in advice over worming your cat or dog. Worming frequency is now determined by risk; familes with children should worm their pets monthly; animals that stay inside permanently should be wormed twice yearly. Simple, easy to use wormers such as Milbemax and Panacur Favourites are available at the surgery. Simply call in for advice or more information.
- January 31st 2005
- Our new web site is now on-line. The site has been redesigned to make it easier to use, to match the colours at the surgery and there have been a few technical changes to ensure as many people as possible can view the site correctly. Our website is an on-going project and if there are any sections or items you would like us to include, please contact us at the surgery.

Pennine Vets was proud to be associated with the
Pets in Need Garden Party on Sunday August 8th. One
of our vets, Ian, was the judge for the dog show
and Julie, our receptionist, organised entries for
the show. Over 60 dogs entered the nine categories
and the judging was extremely difficult. The
largest category, Most Lovable, had well over 40
dogs entered and several other categories had over
20 dogs in them. Fortunately, the sun was shining,
over 600 people attended the day and Pets in Need
raised a lot of money for their good works.

There are now new rules regarding Pet Passports in
the EU. This means that dogs, cats & ferrets
can apply for a Pet Passport and move freely around
the European Union, without further paperwork.
There are still special rules for entering the UK,
with a microchip, rabies vaccine and blood test all
still needed. However, once this part is complete,
travelling within Europe is just as easy as for
humans. Ask us at the surgery for more details, but
please allow at least 7 months before you wish to
return to the UK for all the stages to be
completed.

checks for cats & dogs. Dental and gum disease
are both extremely common in the UK and we hope
through education, preventative care and dental
work to improve the mouths of our patients. It is
amazing how much livlier and happier a cat or dog
is after we have treated their dental problems.
