Bird Flu Advice

This is the latest advice from the government and DEFRA regarding the spread of Avian or Bird Flu. At the moment the disease has not reached the UK but has been found in the south and central regions of France. At the moment it is not spreading between humans. This will probably change in the coming months and years and we suggest that you listen to news reports on the subject. Avian Flu should not be a cause for panic although bird keepers should read the information and follow the advice on biosecurity.

Bird Flu is now causing cases in France in both wild birds and domestic Turkeys. There have been no human cases in France and all the people in contact (farmers, vets & lab workers) have been treated as a precaution. There is still no evidence that the virus is spreading between people.

Do you have more than 50 birds?

Do you have more than 50 birds? If so, DEFRA want you to register your flock by 28th February. If you have 50 or more chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys or game birds, you need to register with the National Poultry Register. This is to enable DEFRA to spread information about any Avian Flu outbreak quickly and to the right people. Registering is free and the only downside is a rather long form. Follow the link for the Poultry Register at the DEFRA web site.

We will try to keep this page up-to-date although for the best and current information / advice, please visit the DEFRA website.
