Laboratory Tests

Through our carefully chosen external labs we offer a full testing service for blood samples, biopsies and swabs. So what can we test for? A blood sample is a very simple test and is easy to take. The liver and kidneys are the 2 main organs tested but other common tests include those for diabetes, thyroid problems and adrenal gland problems. An examination of the red and white blood cells also tells us whether your pet is anaemic or has an infection. These tests can be carried out on anything from a budgie to a Great Dane. Most results will be back within 24 - 48 hours.

Whenever we remove a tumour from an animal, we advise it is sent to the lab for identification. Although with experience we can give an opinion on whether we think it is a benign growth or a malignant cancer, this is never 100% accurate. In order to give you a specific prognosis (idea of the seriousness of the lump), we must send a sample (biopsy) of the lump to an outside pathologist. This is highly recommended for the vast majority of lumps. Most results take between 2 and 4 days.

The final group of common lab tests are swabs for bacterial culture and sensitivity. Any infections that form pus, such as ear infections and abscesses can have a swab taken (basically a long sterile cotton bud). The lab will then try to grow whatever bacteria is on the swab, identify the bacteria and then tell us what antibiotics will work quickly to cure the infection. Any serious infections or infections that don't easily clear up should have a swab taken. Most results take between 2 and 3 days.

Other specialist tests are available and will be suggested by your vet as and when they are needed.
