Operations (Surgery)

We have a dedicated operating theatre here at Pennine Vets where we can perform a wide range of operations from neutering your pet, repairing broken bones, removing tumours and stitching wounds. Our facilities were new in 2004 and include the use of modern anesthetics.

Preparing your pet for surgery

Except in cases of emergencies, we will book your pet in for a specific day for any operations. The night before you can feed your pet as normal but for cats and dogs only, please take all food up before midnight so that they come in for surgery with an empty stomach. This is to stop them from vomiting when given a sedative or anaesthetic. Water can be left down at all times. Please bring your pet to the surgery in the morning, usually between 8.30 am and 9 am. We will want a contact phone number where we can get hold of you during the day (mainly morning) whether this is home, work or a mobile. For x-rays and certain other operations, it is vital that this number will be answered.

What will happen then

Your pet will be sedated to calm him/her before the anaesthetic is given. We have seperate facilities available for cats & dogs which helps keep them calmer and quieter. We will ask you to ring after lunch to arrange a time to collect your pet. Usually, after day surgery, most pets will be available to collect between 4 and 6 pm.
