About our Web Site

The Pennine Vets web site has been written and created by one of our own vets, Ian Mostyn. This allows us to change and improve our website very quickly, both to requests from our clients and to keep news items relevant. The site was first started in December 2003, just before Pennine Vets opened and the site has gone through many changes since then. New sections and articles are constantly added to try to make this site informative and useful.

How is the site written?

The web site is written in fully validated XHTML 1.1 and CSS 2.0. These are the current specifications for web pages written by the World Wide Web Consortium, the world-wide organisation that is responsible for the development of internet technologies and standards. Standards on a web page are important so that any person in the world can view a web page as the designer intended, no matter what web browser they are using. As the internet spreads to handheld devices such as mobile phones, this will become even more important.

The site is also coded in php. PHP is more of a programming language that allows us to add extra features to the site, such as today's date and also makes it easier for us to update the common features of the site such as the navigation bar on each page.

Which web browser should I use?

Internet Explorer (IE) by Microsoft is the world's leader with over 65% of people using it. However, there are other and better programs to use. Firefox is a new browser, developed by a group of programmers from all over the world. It is free to download and use and is constantly updated and used. Firefox tends to be free from the security problems of Internet Explorer and has a few features not in IE that are very useful, such as tabbed browsing, pop-up blockers & easy search bar. Pennine Vets uses Firefox on all our computers and we advise that you download Firefox today. The current version is Firefox 2.0.0.11. In the first 10 weeks of release, over 20 million people have changed to Firefox.

Other great alternative browsers include Opera, Safari & Konquerer
